Wedding Photography at The West Mill Derby
West Mill Wedding Photographer
If you’re looking for a West Mill wedding photographer, you’ve chosen one of the most iconic wedding venues in Derbyshire. As a Nottingham wedding photographer, I’ve photographed weddings throughout the East Midlands and The West Mill remains one of my favourite industrial wedding venues.
Located on the banks of the River Derwent in Derby, The West Mill combines exposed brickwork, huge factory windows and four unique floors, creating endless opportunities for natural and creative wedding photography.
My approach to photographing weddings at The West Mill is relaxed, natural and unobtrusive. Rather than spending hours away from your guests, I focus on capturing genuine moments as they happen, alongside a handful of beautiful portraits that make the most of the venue’s incredible light and character.
Having photographed weddings at The West Mill, I know the best locations for couple portraits, family photographs and those dramatic evening shots that make this venue so special. From the riverside setting outside to the stunning light flooding through the mill windows, every floor offers something unique for your wedding photographs.
Below you’ll find a selection of my favourite West Mill wedding photographs, along with helpful advice for couples planning their wedding at this amazing Derby wedding venue.

Why I Love Photographing Weddings at The West Mill
As a West Mill wedding photographer, I always look forward to returning to this incredible Derby wedding venue. The West Mill has so much character, from its exposed brick walls and industrial features to the huge windows that flood every floor with beautiful natural light. It offers the perfect combination of stylish interiors and relaxed outdoor spaces, making it ideal for natural, storytelling wedding photography.
One of the things I love most about photographing weddings at The West Mill is that every part of the day flows effortlessly. Whether you’re getting ready in the spacious dressing room, saying your vows in the ceremony room, or celebrating with friends and family in the top-floor reception space, there are fantastic opportunities to capture genuine moments throughout the day.
My approach is always relaxed and unobtrusive. Rather than spending hours posing for photographs, I’ll gently guide you when needed while allowing you to enjoy your wedding day. The result is a collection of authentic images that reflect your personalities and the atmosphere of your celebration at The West Mill.

The Best Photo Locations at The West Mill
One of the reasons couples choose me as their West Mill wedding photographer is my knowledge of the venue and the best places for beautiful, natural photographs. The West Mill offers an amazing variety of backdrops without ever needing to leave the venue.
The riverside setting provides a lovely spot for relaxed couple portraits, while the original brickwork, steel staircases and large factory windows create striking architectural backgrounds throughout the building. I particularly love using the soft natural light that pours through the windows, creating timeless images in every season.
As the evening approaches, the warm glow of the venue and the surrounding courtyard provide the perfect setting for romantic golden hour portraits or dramatic evening photographs. We only need around 15–20 minutes away from your guests to create a beautiful selection of images, leaving you free to enjoy your day with family and friends.

Your Ceremony at The West Mill
The ceremony room at The West Mill is a dream to photograph thanks to its large windows and abundance of natural light. This creates beautiful, flattering photographs of your ceremony while also allowing me to capture genuine emotions as they unfold.
Whether you’re planning an intimate ceremony or a larger celebration, I focus on documenting every meaningful moment—from the excitement before you walk down the aisle to your first kiss as newlyweds and the celebrations afterwards. My aim is to tell the story of your wedding day naturally, without interrupting the experience.

Family Photos at The West Mill
Family photographs are an important part of every wedding day, and The West Mill offers plenty of space to create these quickly and efficiently. Before your wedding, I’ll work with you to plan a list of the group photographs you’d like, ensuring everything runs smoothly and takes as little time away from your celebrations as possible.
Using the beautiful surroundings of The West Mill, I’ll create relaxed family portraits that feel natural rather than overly formal, before moving on to your couple portraits and allowing everyone to get back to enjoying the drinks reception.

What Happens if it Rains?
The British weather can be unpredictable, but one of the great advantages of choosing The West Mill is that it photographs beautifully whatever the weather. The venue’s industrial interiors, exposed brickwork, large windows and stylish spaces mean we have plenty of fantastic options indoors if the rain makes an appearance.
If there’s a break in the weather, we can always pop outside for a few minutes to make the most of the riverside setting. Having photographed weddings at The West Mill in every season, I’m always prepared with a backup plan so you can relax knowing you’ll have beautiful photographs whatever the weather decides to do.
Evening party vibes at The West Mill
Once the first dance is announced, and I head over to the dance floor, you can be sure that it will fill up in a few minutes and I will be right in the middle of it photograph all the dance floor action, wielding my camera at all sorts of angles whilst dancing my socks off to whatever party tunes you are playing!

West Mill Wedding Photography Gallery
Below you’ll find a selection of my favourite photographs from this wonderful West Mill wedding. These images showcase just some of the beautiful moments, stunning interiors and relaxed atmosphere that make The West Mill one of my favourite Derby wedding venues to photograph.

A spacious venue set over four floors
The towering old industrial mill is set over four floors. It is rather a unique and practical space for your wedding. Each floor is dedicated to a different part of your wedding. Thus making it very easy to have access to the whole venue all day. Firstly you have the ceremony taking place on the top floor, secondly, the drinks reception on the ground floor. Then you have the wedding breakfast on floor three and finally drinks and dancing on floor two. I love sneaking the couple away after confetti and family groups to the top floor for some fabulous stylised shots by the big windows.
Some of my favourite things about The West Mill:
- The high ceilings and big industrial windows
- The cobbled floor that picks up light
- The courtyard
- The weir and the water
- The different floors for different parts of the day

Planning tips for your West Mill wedding
The great thing about booking your wedding at The West Mill is that the experienced team are so good at helping and guiding you through your wedding planning that you will feel confident and at ease that everything is in hand.
Add to this the sheer beauty of the venue, and there is very little dressing that is needed to make the place look amazing for your wedding. It feels perfect as it is and needs very little added.
Once you have secured your date, and booked the venue, your next step is finding other suppliers for your day. I recommend lots of great wedding suppliers to my couples and you can see some of my favourite wedding suppliers here. But before that, you need to secure your photographer.
