About Hazel Gap Barn
Hazel Gap Barn is set within the stunning Welbeck Estate near Edwinstowe. It is the perfect wedding venue for couples who love a relaxed, rustic atmosphere with a touch of elegance. From the dramatic red brick barns to the warm, light filled interiors, its a venue that offers amazing opportunities for natural, story-telling photography in every season.
Having photographed many weddings here, I know exactly how to make the most of the light, the spaces and the surroundings. Creating natural timeless images – whatever the weather.
As one of my favourite venues to photograph weddings. Here are some of the reasons I enjoy a Hazel Gap Barn wedding –
- The inside space with large doors and windows means there is always somewhere beautiful to take photos. Whatever the weather.
- The dark wood exterior makes for a fantastic backdrop to my wedding portraits.
- The evening light streaming through the trees behind the venue makes for some romantic photos.
- The seasonal changes – bluebell woods in Spring, a snowy backdrop in winter.
With its dramatic red brick barns that greet you as you drive up the sweeping driveway, it really is an impressive wedding venue. You can read more about this exclusive use wedding venue below. Along with a little list of reasons why Hazel Gap Barn is one of my favourite Nottingham wedding venues.

If you are getting married at Hazel Gap Barn, you are in for a treat
Barn weddings are great! And the relaxed and rustic vibe you get with Hazel Gap Barn is fantastic. I particularly love the fire-pit in the courtyard that can be used for toasting marshmallows at the end of the night. It is also a venue that is great for photos. With the woodland just behind the venue, that has bluebells in Spring. Also, the outbuildings look great as a backdrop for portraits. Not to mention the superb pockets of light in the main barn.

Kind words from one of my Hazel Gap Barn couples:
“Kathryn was an absolutely amazing photographer and made us feel so at ease during the whole day. When she arrived in the morning she was full of energy and just kept us laughing all day. She took some incredible photos and we really did feel as if she was one of our guests! We are so happy to have had Kathryn with us on our wedding day, she truly helped to make it as wonderful as it was. Her style, her clear vision and all the candid photos she captured during the day. We would recommend her to anyone looking for a wedding photographer as she is truly one of the best!” Chloe & Alex

Real weddings at Hazel Gap Barn:
Your Ceremony at Hazel Gap Barn
The big high ceiling barn with its rustic Victorian features and grand fireplace at one end. Plus doors opening out onto the courtyard is lovely for your ceremony photos. There is a sweet spot for light right in the centre of the barn. This is a spot I often return to for couple photos later in the day. The light is wonderful here. Sometimes family groups can be taken here too.

Your wedding breakfast at Hazel Gap Barn
The light-filled Oak Room, opening out onto the central courtyard and with stunning views over the gardens is where your wedding reception will take place. It is a great space for photographs, with its large windows on all sides, meaning there is plenty of light for photography. The adjoining bar flows into the central courtyard, making it a great space for your guests to dine and enjoy a drink.

Family group photos at Hazel Gap Barn
I always like to take family group photos fairly soon after your ceremony, so we can get them out of the way quickly and you can return to mingling with your guests and enjoying your wedding. So taking these photos before key people have disappeared to get a drink or off to the loo is key.
There are a few spots for these photos. I tend to either use the courtyard, where people tend to mingle after the ceremony and confetti, so it is easy to get these photos done quickly. Or inside the barn, using the lovely light through the barn doors.

Bridemaids and Groomsmen photos
I like to make these group photos separate to the family formals, just so you can have a bit more fun with your friends. I like to use the courtyard or step outside the courtyard and use the gate for some fun and casual group photos with your best mates.

When it comes to portraits of bridesmaids and groomsmen, I tend to bounce off my couples. I go with the flow. If I have a silly group that want to do some silly poses, I am all for it. If you want elegant beautiful photos, I will direct that. But generally I just get you laughing and giggling together and capture the natural vibes you have going on with your best people. I do get involved and I have even been caught in the crossfire of a snowball fight!

The side of the barn is also a great spot for photos…

Fun, natural moments like this are what make Hazel Gap Barn wedding photography so special. Captured just outside the courtyard, this joyful shot of the bride and her bridesmaids laughing together as the wind catches their hair perfectly reflects the relaxed natural atmosphere that Hazel Gap Barn is known for.

The Best Photo Locations at Hazel Gap Barn
As a natural light photographer, I definitely love to make the most of the natural light. Even on a rainy wedding day! With the huge barn doors, and windows in the dedicated reception area, there is no shortage of natural light. Even if it is too wet to go outdoors. And I have even photographed weddings at Hazel Gap Barn in the snow. Proving that it is possible to get great photos in all weather conditions.
The Barn and interior ceremony space
The barn, which is the main space for your ceremony and evening dancing is wonderful. It is grand, whilst remaining its rustic charm. There are some great spots right in the middle where light pours through the barn doors, which is perfect for portraits and family group photos. As well as your iconic walking down the aisle shot.
The Courtyard
The courtyard is a great place to hangout for you and your guests both in the day, and into the evening, with its fire pits and fairy lights, making it quite the magical space.
The Woodland and Bluebell season
Additionally, in Spring there are some wonderful bluebell woods behind the venue. This is often where I will venture for evening photos as the sun sets beautifully here for some great evening light photos.

What if it rains on my wedding day at Hazel Gap Barn?
With 14 years experience photographing weddings in all seasons and in all weather conditions, I can confidently tell you not to worry about the weather! Of course we all want beautiful sunshine for our wedding photos. But actually a rainy wedding can be heaps of fun! At Hazel Gap Barn, the interior space is perfect for portraits sheltered from the rain. With its big barn doors opening out into the courtyard, the barn lets enough light in for lovely natural portraits. There is also some sheltered area behind the barn, where you can safely keep dry whilst getting some lovely natural light portraits.

I have even photographed weddings in the snow at Hazel Gap Barn and it certainly didn’t dampen the proceedings. I enjoy getting outside for photos in all weather, but if you prefer to keep your feet dry, there are definitely places to shelter and still get your beautiful portraits at Hazel Gap Barn.
